How We Innovate
While every project is unique and therefore requires it's own plan and innovation strategy, the following are examples of the phases that Fred Sparks Design uses to solve design challenges.
Phase 1 – Pre-design Research
In this phase, we work with the client to obtain research appropriate to the scope of the project. We provide our clients with research summaries and raw data. We also create design opportunity boards based on competitive evaluations and observational research that are used to direct product designs and marketing initiatives.
Phase 2 – Initial Concepting
In this phase, we review our research findings for design integration. We provide our clients with pencil sketches from the quick ideation process, as well as some refined line sketches. Preliminary manufacturing and option summaries are created.
Phase 3 – Concept Refinement
In this phase, we refine selected concepts based
on feedback from our client. We create interim refined line sketches and generate appearance color sketches. Works-like prototypes are
created when appropriate.
Phase 4 – Concept Validation
In this phase, we work with the client to bring the concepts to their target demographic. We conduct focus groups and collect data to provide to our client.
Phase 5 – Concept Final Refinement
In this phase, we create color renderings of each design for evaluation and consult with engineering to create preliminary piece-part strategies, and preliminary drawings with rough dimensions and material specifications. During this phase we typically begin developing marketing strategies.
Phase 6 – Concept Finalization
In this phase, we do a number of things that vary, appropriate to the scope of each project. We create Industrial Design 3D models in SolidWorks, develop 3D color renderings to show final design and design details and construct full scale volume studies suitable for review and evaluation of: ergonomics, overall size, spatial relationships, and design intent.
Phase 7 – Design Coordination
In this phase we work with the client’s manufacturing team to ensure proper communication and coordination to produce the desired end result.
